Design Process
In 2022, Architect Semih Eskicioğlu's design was chosen first in the competition held by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to complete the silhouette of the Atatürk Cultural Center in Istanbul's Taksim Square.
Eskicioğlu describes the design process as follows: "The two main elements of AKM stand out. The facade from the past and the hemispherical opera hall. The facade from the past integrates with the sphere form thanks to its permeability and carries the city perceptually into AKM with this integrity. I filtered the meaning of these two elements that complement each other through an abstract filter, taking the permeability and grid structure of the old facade and the sound waves from the opera hall as the representation of art spreading to the city. You can see both of these effects on the work. In order to support the story, I wanted to add interaction with the wave effect by splashing red color based on the meaning of lighting and also when there is an event in the opera hall. Normally, the light is on steadily. We can also see this sound wave story in a wavy form." WELL Lighting Design supported Eskicioğlu in the project as a technical lighting consultant.
